Ahh the new Doctor Who. I am not that interested in writing about entertainment or showbiz, but as it happens I am a bit of a sci-fi fan. In particular the new the Star Trek movies which included the last one having the baddie played by Benedict Cumberbatch. So I decided to watch Dr Who given so many people are talking about it.

I understand that Dr Who is TV without the budget of big movies like Star Wars, Star Trek etc, but sometimes the special effects are, well, hokey. Having said however, it is a testament to the producers of Dr Who (the main writer also writes for one of my favorite BBC shows, Sherlock) that the character development is the main driver of the show.

But this new Doctor? I suppose that is a testament to the franchise that the main actor is 56 years old, yet still the show maintains or increases its audience. It makes me think about Hollywood and the US TV or Movie industry. What is the fascination they have with youth at all times? This seems to be very true on TV. If a show like Dr Who can actually increase or maintain its audience after having been on the air for over 50 years, then clearly an audience can engage in character development based on more than simply youth for the sake of youth.

Which leads to my main point, why is it that the news networks insist on having someone who looks like they are not even ready to shave? CBS just had David Muir take over from Diane Sawyer, and don’t get me started on Ronan Farrow on MSNBC. I took one look at him reading the news and turned off the TV. And I am not that old. But the news deserves gravitas. Not lightweights.
