I love the phrase, Cometh The Hour, Cometh The Man. After all it is pretty clear what it means, but in a rather flamboyant and artistic way. Now the question always is, are we smart enough to recognise the hour in question? Do we get to have enough forsight for the “man” to step forward? Sometimes people recognise a threat. Churchill is an example, when he warned of the rise of Nazi Germany during the 30’s. Trouble was people were so exhausted from WW1, that even if people believed him, no one was going to risk war over it, no matter how compelling the argument.

The GOP had better hope it's not this guy

It is laughable of course that some have compared Trump to Churchill. “We need a leader with qualities that resemble those of Winston Churchill, and I believe that leader is Donald Trump,” evangelical Christian leader Jerry Falwell Jr. wrote in an op-ed in The Washington Post. In fact its ironic that those who look for a good leader could be blinded by someone like Trump. Ben Carson even compared Hillary Clinton to Lucifer. But I would have thought Lucifer would be really clever and deceive you to the point that you would do the dirty work for him. In other words, whoever Lucifer might be, it would not be obvious.

But I digress. So the GOP or OGP, Old Gropers Party, is in serious do do. Either its going to split after a civil war, it will not split but remain divided, or it will act like Trump never happened. But he did happen. And people quite naturally will be looking for who to blame. Did you support Trump? You’re part of the problem. Did you say no to Trump? You’re part of the problem and so on. So where is the man or woman taking charge and saying, I will do what is required to save the GOP? Nowhere.

The logical choice would be Paul Ryan. Young (reasonably). Ambitious (clearly). Smart (mostly). But is he a real leader? Can he back up his convictions despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? Umm.. Nope. Well perhaps not yet anyway. Why fight or support Trump when he is a one man wrecking crew? Better to wait until the inevitable loss, and then lead. Problem is at that point it might be too late. He endorsed Trump but didn’t support him. How two sided is that? Can he be trusted again?

So no, I don’t think its Ryan. It will be interesting to see if someone, anyone can knit the GOP back together again. And it won’t be all the Kings Horses and all the Kings Men trying. Perhaps this person will be someone we have never heard of. Someone brave enough to point out, it’s all over unless we do A, B or C. Trouble is I believe the GOP will have quite a long wait for the “man.”
